What does climate justice look like? This is a particularly important question to address to adequately understand the role that colonialism and capitalism plays, not only in environmental destruction, but in how this destruction has been historically and currently placed to bear on Indigenous communities. In order to tackle the climate crisis, we need to tackle racism as well.
So-called Canada was founded on stolen Indigenous land. The colonial state has continued, throughout its history, to implement violent and colonial systems of policing, racism, xenophobia, and the so-called ‘rule of law’ in order to maintain control. From the exploitation and lack of protections given to migrant workers to the complete disregard to sovereign indigenous nations, we must stand united against colonialism and environmental racism.Please join Climate Justice Victoria as we explore the history of colonial ecocide, and what movements on the ground are doing today to fight back.
About the speakers:
Krisna Saravanamuttu is a community organiser and journalist based in Toronto. He is active in anti-racism movements and liberation movements in Turtle Island and abroad.
Karissa Chandrakate is an Indo-Caribbean immigrant, born in Trinidad and Tobago and currently resides on Lekwungen territory (Victoria, BC). She is a media maker, who uses photography, videography and digital art to amplify under-represented voices and challenge cultural narratives.

This event and host organizations are located on Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ lands. We look to and work with the Indigenous communities leading the climate justice movement on the front lines for guidance and leadership.
