Sunday, June 28th is the 5th anniversary of the hottest day ever recorded in Victoria, part of the week-long heat dome which was the deadliest weather disaster in modern Canadian history (over 600 people died, just in BC). Please join us in remembrance, solidarity, and commitment to protecting communities from future extreme heat events and other climate disasters.
Many of the deaths in Victoria happened in James Bay, and our commemorative walk from Ogden Point along Dallas Road to Mile Zero (Douglas Street) aims to ensure that these lives lost will not be forgotten. (The starting point is the Ogden Point sun dial at Dallas Rd and Dock St.)
Everyone welcome, and each will receive a paper fan with information about the initiative to provide cooling for all and how to get involved in local climate action groups.
The Red Rebel troupe will walk with us, and some giant puppet guests might join us as well.
We will stop along the way to hear from speakers about how to prevent future heat deaths, locally and globally.

We’ve invited City of Victoria’s mayor and councillors and will express solidarity with their unanimous cooling actions (acceleration of Zero Carbon Step Code and the motion re: max heat bylaw) and give them “fan mail” expressing gratitude and emphasizing the many climate emergency actions still needed. Organized by Climate Justice Victoria, Victoria Coolkit, Seniors for Climate Victoria and the Canadian Association of Nurses for the Environment in collaboration with the BC Heat Collaborative.
